Boondocking with a Residential Refrigerator

With retirement two weeks away this couple plans to get off-grid ASAP! To get them started we put together a system with big components that’s fully prepped for a planned expansion within a year when they have a better idea of their needs.

Battleborn Lithium Batteries and Victron Inverter in a Vanleigh Beacon

  • With a Victron Multiplus 3000 Inverter/Charger ran through one of AMSolar's Phase Selecting Switches, we’re able to provide power to every outlet and accessory in this 50 amp rig from a singe inverter. If they’re ever plugged into less than 50 amps when on the grid, they’re able to make full use of the inverter’s hybrid functionality, essentially boosting the output of what they’re plugged into. (Translation: run one of your AC’s, and another large appliance, like a microwave, when you’re only plugged into 15amp service by contributing some battery power to the mix.)

  • 300ah’s of Battleborn Batteries will be a solid chunk of energy storage to help keep that residential fridge running when the sun isn’t out. But with expansion in mind, there’s a perfect little space left for 3 more to be added in the future.

  • On the roof, a 1050 watt tilting solar array, consisting of five, 210W panels, was installed with a bias towards the passenger side of the RV. This will allow this couple to consciously park their rig with the solar array towards the south, and the factory shade awnings will work in unison with the solar array, both shading the RV and harvesting power from the sun.

  • SmartSolar MPPT 150/85-TR Charge Controller w/Bluetooth

  • Two EasyStarts installed in the rooftop AC’s.

  • Victron's smart battery monitor and inverter display were mounted inside a cabinet as requested by the client so they are out of sight when not in use.
